ESCRITOIRE WRITING TABLE - English Walnut & American Black walnut

Made in the style of an 17th century writing table this table / desk incorporates about a dozen secret drawers. A map drawer is incorporated into the cornice.

A removable unit of small drawers and several internal drawers are to be found inside the desk. The top hinges come down to form a writing surface and is supported on a pair of substantial stays.

The whole top unit is supported on a base consisting of five legs, curved scretchers and an apron housing two deep drawers.

Made from English walnut and American black walnut this period piece is complemented by cross grained walnut mouldings, all hand made. Strips of cross grained walnut were glued onto lengths of bevelled pine.

The mouldings were then literally sculpted from the solid wood with moulding planes that were used freehand and known simply as hollows and rounds.

The marquetry elements are stack cut and then sawn into a stained black background. The white flowers are cut from old ivory piano keys.
